Every contact in Vega must have both:
- An Account Status and Account Status Reason
- A Mail Status and Mail Status Reason
These settings determine whether a contact is considered active within your database and whether they can be included in communications.
Configuring Status Reasons
Account Status Reasons and Mail Status Reasons are configured as attributes under the following system attribute types:
- Entity Status Reasons
- Mail Status Reasons
Each status reason must be assigned the appropriate Subtype:
- Active
- Inactive
To configure the subtype:
- Open Attribute Maintenance.
- Locate the required status reason.
- Click More next to the attribute.
- Select the appropriate Subtype.
This subtype determines when the status reason is available for selection.
Account Status Reasons
When a contact's Account Status is set to Active, only status reasons with the Active subtype can be selected.
When the Account Status is Inactive, only status reasons with the Inactive subtype are available.
Mail Status Reasons
Mail Status controls whether a contact can receive communications.
- If OK to Contact is selected, only Active Mail Status Reasons are available.
- If OK to Contact is not selected, only Inactive Mail Status Reasons can be selected.

Default Status Reason
When a new contact is created, Vega automatically selects the first status reason within the attribute type.
The default reason is determined by the Sequence value assigned to the attribute.
To make a status reason the default, give it the lowest sequence number. In most cases, this will be your Active reason.
How Status Affects Queries
The Custom Query tool defaults to returning contacts who are:
- Active
- OK to Contact
These defaults can be changed when building your query.
Most Vega Preset Queries also only return Active contacts who are OK to Contact. Any exceptions (such as queries designed for inactive contacts) will be indicated in the query description.
Searching for Inactive Contacts
When searching for individual contacts, inactive contacts are excluded by default.
To include them, enable the appropriate Search Option.
How Status Affects Communications
When sending Email or Postal campaigns through Engage, only contacts who are:
- Active, and
- OK to Contact
will be included in the campaign audience.
Note: One-off emails can still be sent to individual contacts regardless of their Account Status or Mail Status.
