Overview
The Advanced Configuration section allows you to create specific rules for different combinations of membership type, attributes, renewals, donations, and gift memberships.
When a membership purchase matches all of the conditions configured in a rule, the outcomes assigned to that rule will be used instead of the standard Acknowledgements and Financial settings configured elsewhere in the widget.
Advanced Configuration can be useful when you need different acknowledgement documents, attachments, GL Codes, or Campaigns for different membership types or member selections.
The rules are based on Attributes configured in Vega, so these must be set up before creating your Advanced Configuration rules.
Please note: The standard Financial settings will still be used for the donation Campaign and GL Code.
Open the Membership Widget
- Go to Admin > Widget Configuration.
- Find the membership widget you want to edit.
- Select Edit next to the widget name.
Please note: If you are creating a new widget, select Create Membership Widget. We recommend starting with the Form Setup article in the Membership Widget article series for guidance on setting up a new widget.
- Select Advanced Configuration from the menu on the left.
Create an Advanced Configuration Rule
An Advanced Configuration rule consists of Rule Settings and Outcomes.
The rule settings determine which membership purchases the rule applies to. The outcomes determine what acknowledgement, and financial information will be used when the rule matches.
The available rule settings are:
- Attribute selection
- Membership type
- Renewal
- Additional donation
- Gift membership
The available outcomes are:
- Contact acknowledgement email
- Contact acknowledgement email attachment
- Gift recipient acknowledgement email
- Membership payment GL Code
- Membership payment Campaign
Please see below for further detail on each configuration setting and outcome:
| Configuration Rule Setting or Outcome | Explanation |
|
The first setting determines whether the rule should depend on an Attribute selection. Select Yes if you want the rule to be based on an attribute selected by the member. Select No if you do not want the rule to depend on an attribute. |
|
|
|
When Yes is selected to Use Attributes:
For example, you could use an Attribute Type such as Contact Branch, with different attributes for each branch.
|
|
Select the Membership Type that the rule should apply to. The available membership types will be displayed in the drop-down. You can also select All. This will create the rule for all membership types with a threshold amount configured in the widget, which can save time when the same outcome should apply across multiple membership types.
|
|
|
|
Select Yes if the rule should only apply when the member selects I am renewing my membership. Select No if the rule should apply when the member does not select the renewal option. This allows you to use different acknowledgement documents or financial coding for new memberships and renewals. |
|
|
Select Yes if the rule should only apply to memberships submitted with an additional donation. Select No if the rule should apply to memberships submitted without an additional donation. This can be used to send different acknowledgement documents when a member includes an additional donation with their membership. |
|
|
This rule setting is linked to the option to Show Gift Membership being activated or not in the widget. This is available to include under Form Options: The gift setting is linked to the Show Gift Membership option under Form Options. Select Yes if the rule should apply when the member selects I would like to gift a membership to someone. Select No if the rule should apply when the gift membership option is not selected. |
|
|
For gift memberships, you can select a document to be sent to the gift recipient. This document is sent as the email content only and does not include an attachment. You can use the merge tag #GiftMembershipFrom# to include information about the contact who gifted the membership. |
|
Select the document to be sent to the contact purchasing the membership as the acknowledgement email. For a gift membership, this is the contact purchasing the membership. The membership purchase must match all of the rule settings for the selected document to be used. |
|
|
Select the document to be sent as a PDF attachment to the contact acknowledgement email. The membership purchase must match all of the configured rule settings for the attachment to be included. |
|
|
Select the GL Code to assign to the membership payment when the purchase matches all of the rule settings. This allows different membership types or member selections to be assigned to different GL Codes. |
|
| Select the Campaign to assign to the membership payment when the purchase matches all of the rule settings. |
The screen recording below demonstrates how to set up example rules using Contact Branch Attributes.
In this example, the rules are configured for all Head Office attributes across all membership types. The same process would then need to be repeated for the other attributes, such as Branch 1 and Branch 2.
The example uses the same Campaign and GL Code for all membership types. To assign different outcomes for individual membership types, create a separate rule for each membership type instead of selecting All.
There are 8 possible rule combinations for each membership type, all shown in the recording above:
| Rule setting | Explanation |
| This rule will apply to all transactions processed for a membership only. | |
| This rule will apply to all transactions processed for a renewing membership. | |
| This rule will apply to all transactions processed for a membership with a donation. | |
| This rule will apply to all transactions processed for a gift membership. | |
| This rule will apply to all transactions processed for a renewing membership with a donation. | |
| This rule will apply to all transactions processed for a renewing gift membership. | |
| This rule will apply to all transactions processed for a gift membership with a donation. | |
| This rule will apply to all transactions processed for a renewing gift membership with a donation. |
Each applicable rule combination needs to be configured for each membership type and, where attributes are being used, for each relevant attribute.
For example, an organisation may have different branches and want membership payments from each branch to use different financial coding.
An Advanced Configuration rule could be created for each branch attribute and membership type. The same process can then be repeated for the other required branch attributes.
Where all membership types should use the same outcomes, All can be selected as the membership type to reduce the number of rules that need to be created. Where different membership types need different outcomes, individual rules can be created for each membership type.
Please note: If Show Gift Membership is not enabled on your widget, you do not need to create the gift membership rules.
Manage Existing Rules
Once Advanced Configuration rules have been created, they will appear in the Existing Advanced Configuration table.
From here, you can:
- Edit an existing rule
- View the full rule configuration
- Delete a rule
Viewing the full rule is useful for checking all of the conditions and outcomes configured for a particular membership purchase.
Important: You are responsible for ensuring that only one rule applies to each type of membership purchase. If two rules have the same settings but different outcomes, only one of the rules can be used.

Using Attributes with Advanced Configuration
Attributes can be used to create different outcomes based on a member's selection.
For example, you could create rules for different Contact Branch attributes. Each branch could have its own Campaign, GL Code, and acknowledgement documents.
The member selects their branch on the Membership Widget, and the rule matching that selection determines the configured outcomes.
When using attributes, the attribute selection displayed on the widget is configured under Form Options.
Attribute Display Options
There are two display options for attributes:
- Buttons
- Drop-down
These display the available attribute options in either a row of buttons or a single drop-down menu.
Buttons:
Dropdown:
The order of the options is determined by the Attribute Type sequence, followed by the Attribute sequence. The lowest sequence number is displayed first and is selected as the default.
The attribute selection can be displayed:
- At the top of the widget, above the membership type section
- Below the membership type section
|
|
Vega will automatically display the label:
Please select an option below:
The appearance of the buttons and drop-down can also be customised using CSS.
